The City of Doncaster Council is a confident, ambitious organisation which puts improving the life of its residents at the centre of everything we do. You have a opportunity to be part of this in the role of Health Determinants Research Collaboration Undergraduate Intern.
The Role:
The Council along with our partners at the University of Sheffield and Sheffield Hallam University, have been successful in a bid to host a National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) Health Determinant Research Collaboration (HDRC).
HDRC Doncaster represents significant investment to enable us to become more research active and embed a culture of evidence-based decision making. This new collaboration will help develop research capacity and capability through collaborations with the academic sector and other stakeholders to undertake research to address the wider determinants of health and health inequalities.
HDRC Doncaster have successfully secured funding from the National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) to offer two short term internships to people who are currently studying for a bachelor’s degree or equivalent (e.g. degree apprenticeship, graduate certificate/diploma, Level 6 NVQ) in any subject area.
This is an exciting opportunity to gain experience working in the Health Determinants Research Collaboration at City of Doncaster Council. You will work closely with a multi-disciplinary, cross-organisational team based in City of Doncaster Council, the University of Sheffield and Sheffield Hallam University.
Intern positions are designed to offer the opportunity to develop skills and gain experience whilst making meaningful contributions to the work of the team. You will support the work of the Health Determinants Research Collaboration Doncaster by completing focused tasks which contribute to larger research or infrastructure projects.
The HDRC Data Science Intern will report to the Data and Insights manager. They will work with large health and administrative datasets to manage and organise data for storage and analysis and perform analyses to develop insights from routine numerical data. The intern will also have the opportunity to develop skills in the interpretation and presentation of data insights. Previous experience of data management, coding or statistics would therefore be an advantage for this role.
The HDRC Research Intern will report to the HDRC Research Priorities Practice Lead. The intern will complete defined tasks which contribute to ongoing research projects which may include data collection and analysis, public consultation and priority setting activities. The Research intern will also have the opportunity to take the lead on a small consultation project, providing the opportunity to learn about the research process from the design stage through to presentation of findings.
Some prior understanding of the impact of the wider determinants of health on the health of individuals and populations, as well as of research processes, would be an advantage for both positions.
Excellent interpersonal skills are essential. You should be able to independently plan and deliver work, asking for help when needed.
You will work closely with colleagues in the HDRC, the Public Health Team and across the Council and other stakeholders enabling delivery of HDRC Doncaster within a supportive, flexible and friendly environment.
