An exciting opportunity has arisen for a full time, term time only assistant therapist to join our team to work with children with Special Educational Needs and/or Disabilities to support the development of independence skills. This new innovative post involves working alongside Speech and Language Therapy and Occupational Therapy teams within Special schools in North Tyneside, following a practice development approach to creating opportunities within the classroom and school day for children to develop independence in communication and activities of daily living.
The successful candidate will work in partnership with therapy teams and teaching staff to support children with health needs within their educational setting.
The role will be predominately classroom based, seizing and creating opportunities for children to develop independence in their use of alternative and augmentative communication (both low and high technology) and in activities of daily living (mealtimes, dressing, self care etc.)
The post holder will work closely alongside education staff to foster and maintain a supportive environment to allow children to practice skills with support to achieve independence, which will also include demonstration and coaching to the wider education workforce.

The successful candidate will work under direction and supervision of a registered Speech and Language Therapist or Occupational Therapist and assist them in supporting children to develop and improve specific skills. The role will also involve making and maintaining therapy resources and to contribute to assessment and monitoring of progress through observation.
The successful candidate must be able to meet the travel requirements of the post as it will involve travel to special schools within North Tyneside and other Trust sites.
